چکیده

A sustainable transportation system has been defined as “one that satisfies current transport and mobility needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own” (Black, 1997; Richardson, 1999). The success of sustainable transportation in urban regions depends on encouragement of non-motorized (pedestrian and cyclist) and sharedride transportation modes instead of car-dependent travel. The level of sustainability in transportation can be simply assessed by calculating the corresponding carbon emissions value and comparing the shares of different travel modes. With today’s engine technology, carbon emissions of motorized vehicles is a function of fuel consumption, which is used to power the vehicle and is measured as Vehicle-Km-Travelled (VKT) or idlerunning during waiting times (such as in congestion). Thus, a sustainable transportation policy that aims to effectively reduce CO2 emissions will need to address VKT (especially from private cars) and traffic congestion.

Introduction Urban density includes population density, density of residential areas and employment density In addition, net and gross density are one of the most important determinants of the travel patterns of residents, which can be determined the type and extent of using personal and public transport and consequently the amount of CO2 emission. Kockelman (1997) states that the significance...

A Mechanism for Dynamic Ride Sharing Based on Parallel Auctions

Car pollution is one of the major causes of greenhouse emissions, and traffic congestion is rapidly becoming a social plague. Dynamic Ride Sharing (DRS) systems have the potential to mitigate this problem by computing plans for car drivers, e.g. commuters, allowing them to share their rides. Existing efforts in DRS are suffering from the problem that participants are abandoning the system after...

The limits of technology: Achieving transport efficiency in developing nations

Emissions from the transport sector represent the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions. There is little prospect that this situation will be resolved with a single technological fix. As developing nations quickly move to catch up with the motorisation levels of developed nations, the sheer number of private vehicles on the roadways will overwhelm any advances made by cleaner fuels...

Sustainable urban development through complete street policy implementation

Nowadays, the expansion of the cities is an inevitable necessity; increasing the dependence of the citizens on motor vehicles and, consequently, making development of the transportation networks a necessity rather than an option. Thus, increasing car ownership and car use has created many problems for the cities, such as increasing greenhouse gas emissions, environmental pollution, casualties o...
